Malibu, California is so close to Los Angeles that you could be forgiven for thinking that it was part of the same city. The truth is that it’s really a world away. Everyone needs to take a break occasionally, and there’s no better way to do it then to drive out to the warm sand and cool breezes in Malibu.
Pick up an El Monte RV in Van Nuys (a convenient forty minute drive away) and you’ll soon be on your way. You will want to spend at least a few days by the beach, so pick a spot at Malibu Beach RV Park and settle in. You won’t ever find an RV park with better views than the vistas at Malibu Beach. Every night you can watch the sun dip into the sparkling ocean, and every morning you get to wake up to the sight of early morning wave-catchers!
Once you have settled in, make a trip to Cafecito Organico to try a taste of an incredible local coffee blend. The baristas at this small shop prepare excellent (and organic) old standbys like lattes and cappuccinos, but you can even try their own invention, the lightly cane juice sweetened “cafecito.” The shop is also connected to a bookstore, so you can find the perfect read for your beach trip. They even sell “beach ready” used paperbacks for a dollar!
Once you are properly caffeinated and have some reading material, it’s time to head for the sand and waves. Zuma Beach is a great choice for several reasons. First of all, you’ll be able to find free parking right near the beach. More importantly, the beach isn’t very crowded compared to other choices in Southern California, so your whole family can have fun swimming and boogie boarding in the waves.
If you have something more adventurous than just swimming in mind, you’ll want to try out the adventure sport that Malibu is most famous for – surfing! Malibu Surf Shack will rent you the surfboards and wetsuits you’ll need, and they also provide beginner lessons. With the help of the expert trainers at the Shack, you’ll be catching your first curlers in no time.
After you’ve had your fill of seawater, take a short drive down the Pacific Coast Highway and arrive at the Getty Villa. The Getty Villa is a charming museum packed with ancient Greek and Roman art. You can pore over delicate vases and inspect ancient Greek coins inside, or you can stroll through the gardens and catch your reflection in the recreation of a long, Roman wading pool. If you love the finer things in life, there really isn’t a more relaxing spot on the coast.
To wrap up your trip, you should treat yourself to the fresh Californian-Mexican food at La Costa Mission. In addition to the cozy ambiance of the warm fireplace and the friendly staff, the food is out of this world. Admit it – you want to stop in for some enchiladas with homemade tortillas!
What are you waiting for? It’s time to take an RV trip to Malibu!
