For an autumn trip that can’t be beat, take your RV up to Ulster County, New York to visit the dramatic landscapes of this amazing state. The beautiful mountain ridge rises 2,000 feet above sea level and provides panoramic views of the rugged terrain. As well, you will see fall colors stretched out before you like you wouldn’t believe.
Travel north from New York City to New Paltz, NY where you should stop awhile on your journey. You will find that October in New Paltz offers a lot of autumn fun for the whole family. The Reformed Church of New Paltz Annual Apple Festival deserves a full day of attention. Here there are delicious apple recipes such as apple fritters, apple pies and apple butter to sample. If you have kids with you, they can have a great time painting pumpkins.
Various fall celebrations take place in New Paltz which make this time of year the best to visit. You can enjoy the Organic Potato Festival or the Harvest Fest in the Village of Highland. In town at Halloween, you can take part in some of the tours of historic (and reportedly haunted) Huguenot Street and see the Halloween Parade along Main Street.
After a lot of family fun, it will be finally time to move on, and you are going to head directly to Minnewaska State Park Preserve. There is so much to do here, like hiking, biking, picnicking and rock climbing. Outstanding views are a major attraction, particularly in the autumn with the trees sporting their colorful leaves of gold, red, orange and yellow. Words are never adequate to describe the views. Find RV camping in the area where you can settle down in the evening before the next day’s adventures.
This preserve on the Shawangunk Ridge offers some of the best hiking, biking and horseback riding along its miles of carriageways and footpaths. With a total of about 60 miles of trails to experience, you’ll find hiking through the forests here to see the best autumn colors can’t be matched. Taking a day hike to the top of Millbrook Mountain will be an adventure you won’t want to pass up. When you get to the lookout point called the Hawk Watch, you will look off into the distance to see the Catskill Mountains and the sweeping views over the Wallkill Valley.
Besides hunting, picnicking and enjoying the many recreational programs, hiking is one of the most popular activities in this State Park Preserve. You can find hiking maps, a ski touring guide and a climbing pamphlet are available online so you can plan your trip in advance. The Awosting Preserve to the west is annexed by the Minnewaska State Park and trails lead into this section for more wilderness thrills. You can bike the carriageways in the park if you prefer that to walking.
Before you leave the area, be sure to visit the nearby Mohonk Preserve, with more fall colors that spread out before you after a short climb. You can take one of the Fall Foliage Hikes and get an interesting lecture about the forest and surrounding points of interest. Also nearby at Sam’s Point Preserve you will enjoy a wide panorama of beauty in the fall when you climb to the top of Shawangunk Ridge.
