Plenty to do in Galena and Jo Daviess Counties in Illinois

This post was kindly provided to us by the Galena/Jo Daviess County Convention & Visitors Bureau. All of the photos in this article were provided by them.

Experience the vintage charm and contemporary spirit of Galena and Jo Daviess County… the region’s natural beauty, charming farmsteads, well-preserved historic sites, first-class golfing, regional cuisines, eclectic shops and tranquil spas. Located in northwest Illinois, three hours from downtown Chicago and 90 minutes from Madison, Wis., the destination affords visitors plenty of opportunities to relax, rejuvenate and recharge.

Pucture of the U.S. Grant Home

Ulysses S. Grant Home

The area’s 19th-century history and how it shaped the destination’s architecture continues to be a draw for visitors. The historic architecture here ranges from Greek Revival, Gothic Revival, Queen Anne, Italianate, Galena Traditional, and Vernacular. Galena also produced nine Civil War generals, including Ulysses S. Grant, who later became the country’s 18th president. Both his home and that of Grant crony Elihu B. Washburne are now state historic sites. If you want to learn without walking, let our world-famous trolleys point out the notable local points of interest.

The destination is also known for a wide variety of other attractions. Experiential, hands-on tourism continues to grow, with jewelry making, knitting, crocheting and cooking workshops regularly available. Moreover, art galleries and many studios throughout Jo Daviess County are open to the public and often feature free demonstrations.

You can’t miss the outdoor recreational opportunities that await you around every curve. Breathe the fresh air while hiking or biking our trails. There are a number of state parks and preserves throughout the county that offer hiking and nature trails; some offer fishing and camping. Challenge yourself on the greens of our 10 championship golf courses or take a hot air balloon ride to get a bird’s eye view of the treetops. Afterwards, gallop along on a horseback ride through wooded trails and deep valleys.

The region’s wineries, Galena Cellars Vineyard & Winery, Massbach Ridge Winery, and Rocky Waters Vineyard/Winery, offer tastings of their award-winning wines for a nominal fee. All three vineyards hold events throughout the year. For those who love to tickle their taste buds, visit the Galena Brewing Company on Galena’s Main Street. Their craft brews are manufactured on-site and tours are available for those interested in their operations.

Most importantly, you need a place to call home while in Galena and Jo Daviess County. Visitors who travel here by RV have four primary options to call home.

Apple River Canyon State Park is located in the northern part of Jo Daviess County near Apple River and the Wisconsin border. The park resides in a scenic canyon area that was formed by the winding waters of the Apple River. Limestone bluffs, deep ravines, springs, streams and wildlife populate this area which was once a part of a vast sea bottom that stretched from the Alleghenies to the Rockies. This state park has seasonal camping for roughly 25 RVs, but does not have any electrical or water hookups.

Blanding Landing Recreation Area is on the east bank of the mighty Mississippi River near Hanover. The weather in this area runs from warm and humid in the summer to dry in the fall. The Mississippi River draws crowds of anglers each year to Blanding. The most popular species to catch are channel catfish, bluegill, walleye, crappie and northern pike. Other activities include boating and nearby hunting. The area is open May through October and has 30 sites with electrical hookups and seven sites without any hookups.

Palace Campground was founded in 1848, therefore making it the oldest operating campground in the state of Illinois. Situated on 50 quiet, wooded acres just outside of Galena they are equipped to handle more than 100 RVs at any time between April and November. They have a heated swimming pool, playground, outdoor movies, hayrides, a miniature golf course, arcade building, free Wi-Fi and much more. Sites are all equipped with a variety of hookup combinations.

Vel Terra Ranch and Family Campground is based on more than 165 acres near Elizabeth. With rugged hills, picturesque scenery, abundant trees, wildlife and natural rolling terrain, their campground is a perfect launching pad for your expedition to Jo Daviess County and the surrounding area. They have electric and water hookups at their seven RV campsites, which are open April through November.

Those traveling by RV to Galena/Jo Daviess County should always be aware of the parking and traffic patterns as many of our streets can be difficult for large vehicles to comfortably pass through. For more information on visiting northwest Illinois, call the Galena/Jo Daviess County Convention & Visitors Bureau at 1.877.464.2536 or visit the Galena/Jo Daviess County Convention & Visitors Bureau Web site for information on lodging, events, tours, dining, historic sites and much more.

You may know Georgia from its booming cities, magnificent Blue Ridge Mountains and dense pine forests, but have you taken the time to go RV camping to the South Georgia Coast? If not, you’re missing a fantastic year-round motorhome camping destination.

Tidal rivers, unspoiled beaches and a history rich with the contributions of many cultures have created a region unlike any other in the US. Here’s a short list of the places RV travelers will want to visit as they mosey down to Georgia’s southern coast.

Blythe Island Regional Park, located on the tidal South Brunswick River, is a nice place to become familiar with coastal Georgia. With full-hookups RV campsites, a marina that offers kayak and canoe rentals and easy access to both freshwater and tidewater fishing, Blythe Island offers the perfect introduction to the South Georgia Coast.

Talk a walk on a windswept beach or visit the island’s Georgia Sea Turtle Center. All this and more is waiting to occupy the time you spend on Jekyll Island.

St. Mary’s River – This “blackwater” river with its roots in mighty Okefenokee Swamp and its toes in Cumberland Sound offers RV camping anglers lots of action. An RV Trip along Arizona’s Exciting Highway 95

Skirt the California/Arizona border on Highway 95, and you’re liable to find dozens of spots worth stopping to explore. From bright desert vistas to the stunning beauty of Lake Havasu, this highway leaves no doubt you’ve arrived someplace special.

Although the route we’ve chosen might take a hurried traveler a couple of hours, savvy RV campers know that slowing down the pace yields traveling pleasures worth savoring. So slow down now and start planning your own AZ-95 RV trip, with a little help from our travel tips below.

AZ-95 RV Itinerary
We pick up our Arizona Hwy 95 RV journey at an amazing place, Havasu National Wildlife Refuge. Straddling the line between California and Arizona and about three hours east of Victorville on I-40, this desert refuge soon reveals the rugged beauty of the Topock Gorge.

Canyon walls line a twenty-mile stretch of the lower Colorado River and tempt hikers, paddlers and wildlife photographers to explore its length. There’s plenty to see and do in Topock Gorge, Topock Marsh and the Havasu Wilderness Area. Don’t rush past Havasu National Wildlife Refuge before turning south on AZ-95 for the rest of our RV camping itinerary.

When you complete your exploration of the wildlife refuge, you’re in for another treat. Lake Havasu City, immediately south on AZ-95, is an RV camping paradise. Hundreds of RV campsites are offered by Lake Havasu area campgrounds, so do your research and choose the spot that suits your travel style. Here are some favorites reported by AZ-95 RV travelers, all located on Havasu Island, just across the world-famous London Bridge:

By the way, if you’re traveling AZ-95 by RV in January, book a campsite early on Havasu Island, so you won’t miss the annual Havasu Island Balloon Festival & Fair!

Whether you decide to fish, swim, hike, boat or otherwise relax in the bright blue waters and redrock canyon shoreline that is Lake Havasu, you’ll wish you’d planned even more time to enjoy the city. You’ll be amazed by Lake Havasu City’s vibrant year-round welcome.

A couple more spots will capture your attention as you head south by RV on AZ-95. You’ll be hugging Lake Havasu along its southern coves and then swinging back west to follow the lower Colorado River. Be sure to stop at Lake Havasu State Park for one more chance to enjoy the lake’s bright blue waters, to catch a glimpse (or a vacation photo!) of the park’s resident bighorn sheep, and to take advantage of affordable, no-hookups campsites.

Another vacation joy RV travelers can experience at the south end of our route is the peaceful beauty of Buckskin Mountain State Park. The surrounding “bare rock” heights in awesome shades of pink and red make a wonderful backdrop for a night of RV camping.

When you’re ready to move on, continue south along the Parker Strip that parallels the lower Colorado all the way to Parker, AZ. No desert wasteland here! Instead, you’ll find a tourist-centered region where RV parks, a casino and plenty of places to play line the banks of the Colorado River. Because the river and the surrounding mountains attract tourists year-round, you’ll want to book your campsites early at Parker Strip campgrounds.

There’s no better way to experience the Colorado River, Lake Havasu and the rugged mountains that frame them than by traveling Arizona Highway 95. With a wealth of excellent RV campgrounds along the way and a great view literally out every window, why wait to visit this renowned region in Western Arizona?
