RV Road Trip to Lake Michigan Lighthouses Near Chicago

Without ever leaving the Chicago area, it’s possible to visit, photograph and learn more about four historic lighthouses. Your first order of business, before starting your road trip along the Lake Michigan shoreline, is to find comfortable RV camping. Staying in one of the many suburbs of Chicago is a great option; you’re outside the busy city but close enough to see all the attractions. Here are a few suggestions for RV camping within about an hour of the Chicago shoreline:

  1. Empress Casino/Hotel/RV Resort: Joliet, IL
  2. Jellystone Park/Resort Chicago: Millbrook, IL
  3. Chicago Northwest KOA – Union, IL

Chicagoland Lake Michigan Lighthouses
Now, to the Chicago area lighthouse itinerary – start by driving to Navy Pier in Chicago and getting a good look at the Chicago Harbor Light. On a clear day, you’ll be able to see it easily from the pier; you might also consider a cruise with one of the charter services that operates in the area.

Look south from the same pier and you’ll be able to see a good example of a “structural light,” the Chicago Harbor Southeast Guidewall Light. The still-functional light sits atop a metal structure on one of the breakwaters in Chicago Harbor. It is also visible either from the pier or by boat tour.

To experience picturesque Grosse Point Lighthouse, travel north from Chicago to the city of Evanston, IL. Near the campus of Northwestern University stands this tower built in 1873, as well as the keepers’ dwelling, in a beautifully-landscaped park operated by the city. Arrive for one of the summer-only tours and you’ll be challenged to climb the 141 steps to the top of the light!

One more Lake Michigan lighthouse on the western shore near Chicago can be found at the end of Government Pier in Waukegan, IL. According to Terry Pepper’s comprehensive Seeing the Light – Lighthouses of the Western Great Lakes, the original lighthouse installation included a keepers’ dwelling, but a fire in the 1960s destroyed much of the structure. What remains is a white iron tower topped with an acrylic lens, which can be reached by walking out onto the pier.

That covers the four lights found in Chicago Harbor and north to the Illinois/Wisconsin border. Immediately south across the Indiana border, you can easily visit a half dozen lights, from Calumet Lighthouse to the nicely-restored Old Michigan City Lighthouse, by adding just a couple more days to your Chicago-area RV trip. If you’re interested in ranging farther north, there are more than a dozen lighthouses along Lake Michigan’s western shore within Wisconsin’s borders.

You may soon start to see RV camping in Chicago in a whole new light, thanks to the abundance of lighthouses illuminating Lake Michigan. Use these tips to start planning your next RV camping vacation to Chicago; it just might be the beginning of a lifelong love affair with Lake Michigan’s historic lights.

This immensely popular playground can become one of your family’s favorite motorhome camping destinations, too, and there are two great reasons why.

First – Chain O’ Lakes Recreation
Of course, the main reason Chain O’ Lakes draws throngs of visitors each year is the wide range of outdoor recreation possibilities. Hiking, fishing, boating, skiing, biking and wildlife watching – those are just a few of the things RV camping fans will find to do here.

Whether you fish from a boat or a pier, you’ll find plenty of places to catch muskie, bluegill, crappie, largemouth bass and other species in the region’s nine major lakes (and on the Fox River.) The Chain O’ Lakes area also abounds with fishing guide services, boat rentals and marinas to serve enthusiastic anglers.

Trails wind their way around the lakes, along the Fox River and across public lands to allow hikers and bikers room to get out and move. Trails.com offers an excellent listing of Lake County, Illinois trails in such picturesque spots as Turner Lake Fen Nature Preserve, Chain O’ Lakes State Park and Volo Bog State Natural Area.

And don’t forget to get out on the water once you’ve parked your RV near one of these scenic lakes. Kayaks and canoes wind their way down quiet channels and along the shorelines of Northern Illinois’ chain of lakes. Ski boats pull water sports fan across wide expanses of blue while fishermen scoot through marshes and coves at the speed of a trolling motor. There’s a place to do it all once you make your way to Chain O’ Lakes.

Second – Chain O’ Lakes Camping
Throughout the Chain O’ Lakes region are campgrounds offering splendid views and legendary hospitality. Although permanent lakeside residences have lately become the norm, there are still plenty of places to park your RV. For example, in the region’s northeast corner near Grass Lake, motorhome campers can enjoy riverside campsites at Fox River Recreation.

Another place highly praised by RV enthusiasts is Chain O’ Lakes State Park, bordering Grass, Nippersink and Marie Lakes. Five campgrounds there offer a wide range of services, but each promises easy access to the water.

One more suggestion – Grass Lake Marina and RV Park on the eastern shore of Grass Lake. It exemplifies classic Chain O’ Lakes hospitality, outdoor fun and a family atmosphere.

Here’s a bonus reason for coming to this fantastic water playground; quaint villages line the shores of the region’s world-famous waters, places like the Village of Fox Lake, where visitors have come to relax since 1907. Another place you can visit to get the feel of classic lake living is the Village of Antioch, Illinois. Beautiful city parks, a nicely historic downtown and an abundance of summer events make this little town a family-friendly place.

If you’ve never gone RV camping to Illinois’ Chain O’ Lakes Region, it’s time you did. Relax, renew and fill your days with good, old-fashioned summer fun. That’s what you’re going to find, and all just a short drive north of Chicago.

RV in the Mood for Love?

The following is a reprint of an El Monte RV Rentals’ press release.

El Monte RV Promotes Valentine’s weekend romantic road trips by giving free Valentines Day RV rental.

Picture of an RV at the BeachLOS ANGELES, Calif. – Valentine’s Day is quickly approaching and El Monte RV is celebrating a long history of helping couples create romantic road trips by offering to give Valentine’s Day free as a fourth RV rental night to customers who rent for three nights.

Couples from around the world have celebrated honeymoons, anniversaries, Valentine’s Day weekends, and many other romantic occasions on road trips in motorhomes rented from El Monte RV.

“We recently had a young couple in love come over from Germany and rent for 10 days. At the end of their trip they were so inspired they went to Las Vegas and got married!” said Ammar Alghafari, general manager of El Monte RV’s Los Angeles location. “Of course there is no way to predict what will happen on a road trip. But couples from all over the world come to rent our motor homes for romantic road trips.”

“Road Trips are for Lovers,” said Ken Schork, CEO of El Monte RV. “Some people spend months preparing for these beautiful trips. Others do them on the spur of the moment. They plan their moonlight walks on the beaches, sitting by the campfire, candlelit dinners in quiet places. A motorhome is a chance for two people to get away and be alone surrounded by beauty. There’s something inspiring about ‘Just Us’, out to explore the world.”

There are many ways to prepare for a romantic RV road trip adventure. Part of the fun of road trips is the planning. The most important thing to remember is to include your significant other in this. Get together and imagine all the places you can go and things you can see and do together. Don’t over plan. The purpose of this trip is romance. Below is a list of six things you can do to get started planning your “Valentine’s Weekend RV Road Trip for Lovers”:

  1. Keep it short and sweet. Find a couple of romantic places nearby that you both enjoy. Maybe you like wineries or romantic outdoor settings? Do you both love the beach? Just remember not to plan too much. This is not a military expedition.
  2. Create a soundtrack for your romantic weekend. Do the two of you have a song? Do you have favorite bands or music from those romantic moments in your past? Create a play list of all your music and bring it along to listen to while you are driving or for slow dancing in the motorhome or around the campfire. This will not only bring back those great romantic memories, but it will also stimulate some great conversation.
  3. Don’t forget the special things that you might need on your trip. Some couples want to bring a bottle of champagne to share by the campfire. Others might want to bring extra blankets to use while they lay under the stars together at night. Candles, flowers, and other items can help set the mood.
  4. Consider bringing essentials to help you remember the trip. You will at least want to bring a camera or video camera, and maybe a tripod.
  5. The person you are taking with you is the reason for this trip. Before you go the two of you should each think about reasons why you want to spend time together exploring. A great way to show your partner you thought about them would be to bring a few small gifts to surprise each other with along the way. Does your partner like chocolate? Maybe they love a certain cologne or perfume? Is there something special you could give them that would let them know you were thinking about this trip with them?
  6. Mementos are a good way to remember a great trip. As you travel along don’t forget to pick up little items that will help you remember significant events and destinations you experienced. Plan to look for these special items on your way.

“We’re always delighted to find out that couples are renting our motorhomes for honeymoons, anniversary trips, and romantic getaways,” said Joe Laing, Director of Marketing for El Monte RV. “We believe that RV rentals offer couples a unique opportunity to explore the wonders and beauty the U.S. has to offer and still keep the closeness and privacy that they want to enjoy while traveling together.”

El Monte RV hopes to encourage more couples to experience the joys and adventures of romantic RV road trips. With links to road trip destinations, comprehensive trip preparation services and full-service RV rentals, the RV rental and sales firm provides a single point of planning for couples preparing for romantic RV getaways.

RV Camping along the Turquoise Trail

There’s no better way to see the American Southwest than by getting off the interstate and following roads that wander through desert, mountains and little-visited villages. The Turquoise Trail National Scenic Byway allows RV camping fans to do just that. Follow along as we offer our overview of New Mexico’s Turquoise Trail.

What You’ll See and Do on the Turquoise Trail
Taking the south to north route along the Turquoise Trail means starting your journey at Tijeras, New Mexico, seventeen miles east of Albuquerque on I40. Take the time while in Tijeras to make at least two stops – Tijeras Pueblo Archaeological Site and Cibola National Forest. You’ll gain new perspective on the Southwest’s earliest inhabitants and the immensity of a one million acre wilderness encompassing five mountain ranges.

Traveling on toward Sandia Crest on the Turquoise Trail you’ll pass through the villages of Cedar Crest and Sandia Park. Linger long enough to enjoy The Museum of Archaeology and Material Culture at Cedar Crest and such memorable roadside attractions as the Tinkertown Museum. Simply driving your RV through Cibola National Forest will take your breath away, but for a heart-stopping view high above the Turquoise Trail, travel to the ten-thousand-plus-feet peak of Sandia Crest by RV or on the Sandia Peak Tramway.

Once you’ve had your fill of the wonder of Sandia Crest, head your RV back down the mountain to Hwy 14 and the village of San Antonito. Continue north to the gold rush town of Golden, where you’ll find 1830s mining equipment along the road, surrounded by ruins to photograph and a general store to meet your travel needs.

And then it’s north to the historic mining town of Madrid (MAD-rid), where once mighty coal mines are now the backdrop for a thriving artist’s colony. Plan time to wander the streets searching for treasure at the galleries and shops; you’ll find the area’s legendary turquoise celebrated in many forms.

As you wind your way on mountain roads toward Cerrillos, keep an eye out for signs of the turquoise deposits that gave this byway its name. Stop to enjoy the Old West feel of Cerrillos, once a center for turquoise mining in the Southwest.

Finish your journey north to Santa Fe with a stop at San Marcos and Lone Butte, where reminders of the area’s mining history are everywhere. You’ll also find galleries, a sculpture garden and even an art institute to entertain you in these mountain villages.

Your next stop, Santa Fe is, of course, worthy of an entire blog post! This beautiful mountain city offers all the comforts of modern civilization in an ancient setting rich with Pueblo culture. Visit the galleries for which the city is famous and be sure to wander the streets near the Palace of the Governors for a true taste of Santa Fe’s fascinating history.

Where You Can Camp on the Turquoise Trail
Scenic campgrounds dot the landscape all along the Turquoise Trail National Scenic Byway. Here are just a few ideas to help you plan your RV trip.
