RV Camping to Canyoneering Adventures

Have you latched onto the emerging sport of technical canyoneering? If so, you already know the joys of squeezing through impossibly slender openings between boulders, rappelling down slickrock and swimming an icy cold stream at the bottom of a canyon. With all that adventure happening in the great outdoors, why ruin it with a long drive to a faraway hotel room? RV camping to your canyoneering adventures puts you close to the action and ready to face the day well-rested.

Best RV Camping/Canyoneering Destinations
Canyon in Zion National ParkThe massive, colorful canyons of Utah’s Zion National Park are the perfect playground for experienced canyoneering enthusiasts. There are also well-maintained RV campgrounds within the Park, and several just outside the Park’s boundaries. Use this National Parks Service web page to find the campground closest to your day’s planned adventures, and be sure to make reservations wherever allowed.

Have a hankering to negotiate awesome slot canyons in Arizona? The Oak Creek Canyon/PumphouseWash/James Canyon formations just south of Flagstaff are a magnet for climbers well-versed in sliding over wet boulders and rappelling a sheer rock face. Here’s a truly helpful website with links to all the RV campgrounds in the Sedona/Oak Creek Canyon area. Plan to stay several days; this mountain paradise is filled with canyoneering possibilities.

The Adirondacks High Peaks Area surrounding Lake Placid New York is a good place to get your ropes wet if you’re newer to canyoneering. With forty-six peaks above four thousand feet, there are plenty of boulders, canyons and streams to traverse. The Adirondack Camping Association has a fantastic website that allows you to search the six million acre Adirondack wilderness for the perfect motorhome campground.

A favorite California canyoneering expedition is to navigate Allison Gulch in the San Gabriel Mountains all the way up to the Allison Mine. Located north of Azusa, CA, the scenery is spectacular and the RV camping wonderful at campgrounds like Camp Williams Resort on the banks of the San Gabriel River.

No canyoneering discussion would be complete without mentioning the grandest adventure of all, Arizona’s Grand Canyon. Here’s a discussion of the journey one intrepid Grand Canyon canyoneering group took through this endless collection of sheer drops and slot canyons. You may find yourself sleeping on the banks of the Colorado while in the backcountry, but a comfortable RV in a full-service campground allows well-deserved rest at the end of the trail. Railside RV Park in Williams, AZ offers a free shuttle in and out of the National Park as one of its many amenities.

Don’t spend your vacation climbing the walls at home! Pack your gear and explore one of America’s amazing canyons. With the comfort and convenience of RV camping, you’ll save your energy for the challenge of your canyoneering adventures.

RV Vacation Itinerary – Central California Lighthouses

Point Pinos LighthouseDoesn’t the thought of rambling down the California coastline, photographing scenic lighthouses, have you yearning to break free from the day-to-day? Fortunately for those dreaming of just such a trip, RV rental makes the journey quite affordable. The time and effort you’ll save driving your temporary home down the coast makes a California lighthouse tour a great vacation option. Here’s just a sampling of the lighthouses you may want to visit on your RV journey along California’s central coastline.

Suggested California Lighthouse Itinerary

  1. San Luis Obispo Light: Take the short drive south from the city of San Luis Obispo to the shore, where the San Luis Obispo Light began warning ships off the rocks in 1890. The lighthouse is now part of an historic preservation district, and is accessible only by guided hiking tour on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Book your tour reservation, and while you’re at it, book an RV campsite at Pismo Sands RV Park, right across San Luis Obispo Bay on Hwy
  2. Point Sur Lighthouse: Head north up Hwy 1 to Point Sur State Historic Park & Lighthouse and climb to the top of the light during one of the fascinating guided tours. When you’re ready for a break, Big Sur Riverside Campground is a beautiful place to stay.
  3. Point Pinos Light: Just up the coast is historic Point Pinos Lighthouse, built in 1855. Well-trained docents give tours and answer questions from those who quickly fall in love with this light with a colorful past. (Be sure to ask about the “Socialite Lighthouse Keeper”!)
  4. Santa Cruz Light and Santa Cruz Breakwater Lighthouse: Two modern day lighthouses, constructed on historic foundations, are located on the north side of Monterey Bay. Santa Cruz Breakwater Light was constructed when the artistic citizens of Monterey wanted an aesthetic, rather than functional, lighthouse at the end of Atlantic Avenue. Beautiful, brick Santa Cruz Light now houses the Santa Cruz Surfing Museum. Be sure to see both lighthouses on your journey through Central California.
  5. Pigeon Point Lighthouse: Before leaving the Monterey Bay Area, be sure to walk the rocky grounds around Pigeon Point Lighthouse. Currently awaiting repairs, it’s still a marvelous photo opportunity and trained staff on the grounds can fill you in on the light’s history. If you park your RV at Santa Cruz North KOA, you can wake up to a perfect view of Pigeon Point Light.

These six lighthouses and the surrounding beauty of the California coastline are more than enough to fill a week of RV camping. We’ll keep you posted on even more suggested California lighthouse tour itineraries, so keep checking back on the blog. In the meantime, visit our website at El Monte RV Rentals and see how affordable a California RV rental can be. You’re on the road to a marvelous time RV camping your way to California’s great lights

The area includes the communities of Boca Grande, Don Pedro Island, El Jobean, Englewood-Cape Haze, Little Gasparilla Island, Manasota Key, Palm Island, Placida, Port Charlotte and Punta Gorda. From exploring the outdoors and the water, taking in the arts and music to shopping and dining in eclectic spots, here are ten ways the locals suggest for visitors to enjoy this unique vacation getaway:

Five barrier islands, two state parks and miles of beaches offer access to delightfully open stretches of sand, sun and surf. Fish the Alphabet:
Sport fishermen know the area as “the Tarpon Capital of the World,” but “T” is just one letter in the alphabet of fish that flock here – Amberjack, Bluegill, Cobia, Redfish, Snook, Tarpon – and the list goes on. Some are deliciously edible and easily found in this fishing mecca. Those who want to eat their hard-earned catch can take it to the Village Fish Market at Fishermen’s Village in Punta Gorda where they’ll prepare it any way you like.

Be seen sipping a signature martini and nibbling on tapas by the pool as the sun sets.

Dine Like James Beard:

Great Washington State RV Camping Adventures

North Cascades National Park ComplexThe state of Washington is well-known for its vibrant urban areas; Seattle, Tacoma and Olympia spring to mind. RV campers have long known, however, that the spectacular natural diversity of Washington State also offers RV camping adventures for every season. They also know that it’s not if, but when, you’ll return once you’ve seen the beauty of The Evergreen State.

RV Camping in Washington’s National Parks
One of the best ways to experience all that Washington has to offer is by visiting its National Parks. National Parklands adorn the mountains, lakes and seashores of Washington. Within North Cascades National Park Complex, for example, you’ll also find Ross Lake and Lake Chelan National Recreation Areas.

Whether you like fishing or kayaking the Skagit River, hiking some of the hundreds of scenic trails or getting up close and personal with more than three hundred glaciers, motorhome campers will be thrilled by the abundance of outdoor activities this Park complex encompasses. Check here for more information on RV campgrounds at North Cascades National Park Complex.

If you’d like to splash in the surf, hike in the mountains and enjoy the cool, green forests of Washington all in the same RV camping trip, Olympic National Park is the place to park your motorhome. Located within the Olympic Peninsula, this Park is an easy drive from Seattle.

Watch for elk and enjoy breathtaking views in all directions as you hike mile-high Hurricane Ridge. Visit the world-class visitor’s center at Port Angeles, and experience the rocky coastline at Rialto Beach. There is so much diversity in the eco-systems and outdoor experiences of Olympic National Park; you’ll soon be planning your trip back. Plan to stay at one of the RV campgrounds within the Park, so you won’t have to miss a minute of this fascinating destination.

Two more National Parks deserve mention as awesome motorhome camping destinations in Washington. Mount Rainier is, of course, one of the best-known sites to Washington visitors. You’ll see so much more than its memorable snow-capped peaks, however, when you visit Mount Rainier National Park. Temperate rainforests, glaciers and a silent volcano co-exist with mountain meadows and old growth forests. Stow your camera somewhere close at hand as you pull your RV into this unforgettable Park. Two campgrounds can accommodate RVs, so be sure to make your reservations early.

San Juan Island National Historic Park, located within the Strait of Georgia, combines the best of Washington’s natural wonders with a look into the State’s military history. Occupied at the same time by both American and British troops, this windswept island situated between British Columbia and the US was considered a strategic point for protecting the area’s rich natural resources that both countries hoped to control.

Today’s motorhome campers can see not only historic reenactments at the American Camp and English Camp, but also thrill to the sights of orca whales, porpoises and a wide range of shore birds. You may also spy a fox or two, and glimpse eagles in the sky high above the island. Lakedale Campground offers beautiful lakeside campsites and opportunities for kayaking, camping, fishing and whale watching on-site.

There’s so much more to see in Washington State, enough to fill another entire article. Dip your toe into the glorious sites of The Evergreen State by first RV camping in its National Parks. There’s no better way to get to know this gem in America’s Pacific Northwest.

If you need an RV rental for your Washington State vacation, see the El Monte RV Ferndale / Bellingham RV Rentals and Seattle RV Rentals locations.
