How ’bout an RV Golf Vacation

RV GolferIt turns out that many RV Parks/Resorts have golf courses. These range from small par 3 golf courses, through 9 hole courses and up to very challenging 18 hole courses. So not only can you get away into the great outdoors and do many of the things that people associate with RV camping (fishing, hiking etc.), you can also get in many good rounds of golf.

Many golf courses also have RV parks associated with them. So some very challenging and demanding courses allow you to come and hook up and step out your door onto the links.

Often these RV/Golf resorts will include a certain number of holes of golf with an overnight stay. So for the avid golfer, why not plan an itinerary to several different RV/Golf resorts for the ultimate golf vacation?

RV Camping with Your Pet

For many, what to do with the family pet can be a big impediment to planning a family vacation. Others simply cannot imagine going anywhere without their four-legged family member.

RV Camping can be the answer for both. Most RV Rental companies allow you to have pets in their RVs (El Monte RV does). Most RV campgrounds also allow pets. In North Carolina there is even a campground that promotes themselves as a “dog dedicated campground“. Be sure to check them out – Four Paws Kingdom.

So instead of wondering where to put your pet while you are away, with an RV the challenge becomes planning a great RV camping adventure because Fido is coming with you.

While taking your pet with you on your RV vacation can be fun and rewarding for all involved, there are some common sense tips that you should remember:

  • Call Ahead – Call campgrounds ahead of time to make sure they are pet friendly. Make sure to ask if they have any weight limitations for dogs.
  • Vaccinations and Medical Records – Make sure that your pets are up to date on their vaccinations (rabies, distemper, etc.) and have appropriate documentation with you to prove it. It is not a bad idea to also have their full medical record with you and to obtain a number of a local vet at your destination just in case your pet needs treatment.
  • Pet First Aid Kit – Have a pet first aid kit and at least a briefing from your pet’s vet on how to use it, just in case (see here for some pet first aid items).
  • Travel Restraint – Provide a protective travel crate or restraint for you pet so that they do not get hurt in the event of a sudden stop, and so that they will not interfere with the driver.
  • Regular Stops – Plan on stopping regularly when traveling to allow your pet to get some exercise and allow them to relieve themselves (remember to clean up after your pet).
  • A Few of their Favorite Things – Bring some things that are familiar to your pet to help them to feel at home in their home away from home.
  • Identification - Have identification on your pets (tags, implants etc.) to make them easy to identify and you easy to contact should they get lost.
  • Keep Your Pets Quiet and Under Control – This means that you should make sure that you have proper pet restraint (leashes and crates) so that they cannot run free. This is true for many practical reasons as well, such as:
    • Far away from home it would be very easy for your pet to get lost.
    • In the great outdoors, your fluffy and playful family pet looks a lot like dinner to other inhabitants of the wild…
  • Clean Up After Your Pet – The single biggest complaint other campers have is pet owners who do not clean up their pet’s “business”.
  • Respect Others – Remember that while you may appreciate your pets, others in the campground may not. Not everyone is a pet person, no matter how foreign that point of view may be to you…

See the following for some additional tips and advice:

So don’t worry what to do with your pet while on vacation. Take them with you on a fun and exciting RV vacation!

An Overview of Recreational Vehicles

You’ve taken that first step and decided to rent or purchase an RV. That’s great, but which one? With the wide variety of recreational vehicles on the market, it can help to have a guide to the basic styles available. By reading through this quick list of RV style basics, you, too, can get up to speed on which motorhome is right for you.

Question: I see the terms “RV” and “motorhome” used frequently. Are they all talking about the same thing?
Answer: these terms are used interchangeably to mean a vehicle you can both drive and sleep in. There are several classes of these, as detailed below:

Class A MotorhomeClass A Motorhome
These are premium camping vehicles, specially built on a commercial truck chassis. These RVs come in both gas and diesel models. Basically the size of a city bus, many Class A motorhomes have slide-out compartments that can be opened at the campground to increase the living space inside. These vehicles typically contain luxurious features such as ceramic tile baths, televisions with DVD players, custom kitchens and so on. Definitely not for “roughing it”, these beautifully built motorhomes provide the ultimate in camping comfort.

Class B Motorhome
Commonly known as van conversions or camping vans, these vehicles also provide the luxury of taking your hotel room with you, but on a much smaller scale. They might take the shape of a full-size van customized with a sleeping area, eating space, and a small kitchen with water storage tanks. A Class B motorhome can also be a “pop-up” camper van with extended head room and living space built in to the passenger area.

Class C MotorhomeClass C Motorhome: If you’ve ever passed an RV on the highway that had an extra compartment above a truck cab, you’ve seen a Class C motorhome. These RVs may or may not have slide-out sections to expand the living space, and usually have a separate bedroom plus additional sleeping space above the cab. A step down from the Class A models, they’re still a comfortable way to travel long distances and save the

Question: I understand now about motorhomes, but what’s a “fifth wheel“?
Answer: A fifth wheel trailer is one type of towable camping trailer, but there are other kinds of towables, as well. Here’s a breakdown of their similarities and differences.

Fifth Wheel TrailerFifth Wheel Trailer
This type of camping trailer is towed by way of a large goose neck hitch, installed in the bed of a pickup truck. Someone who purchases a fifth wheel would need to have this equipment installed in their truck in order to tow it. Some RV rental companies deliver fifth wheel trailers to customers who intend to live in them for an extended period. These camping vehicles can be quite luxurious, with full-size refrigerators, microwaves and their own heating and air conditioning systems.

Towable Camping Trailers
There are several levels of these towable trailers, but, in general, they are travel trailers that are towed by a ball hitch attached to a truck, van or SUV rather than a gooseneck hitch. The largest of these can sleep up to five adults and feature comfortable kitchens and baths.

Whether you decide to purchase the most luxurious Class A “diesel pusher”, or to rent a comfortable, affordable travel trailer, RV camping can provide years of happy vacation memories. The most important thing is to get out on the road and start camping!

Family RV Vacation of a Lifetime

An RV Vacation Through Utah, Wyoming, Colorado, Arizona and New Mexico

The following was submitted by an RV Vacation Fan.

It was the summer of Y2k. My family (husband, wife & 2 sons) had planned a six-week trip traveling through five western states in an RV. We started with an RV Rental in Salt Lake City where we flew in two days before settling into our new “home.”

Our RV was a Class A, 36 feet long and slept six to eight. It had all the makings of home except the washer and dryer. There were two TV’s, stereo, refrigerator, stove and microwave. What more could we ask for? The grocery trips were fun – we could just leave the store and be home.

We drove up to Jackson Hole and to Grand Teton National Park. It was our dream family vacation. Teaching the boys, albeit young, only six and nine, about our country’s history in real life!

After spending one night, we continued our drive north to Yellowstone National Park. It was amazing. We had booked the campground for a week, rented a car to tour the park and settled in to see the geysers and the wild life. Old Faithful was as true as they say. We hiked the trails and saw deer, moose and bison close enough to see the color variations in their fur.

The boys, with my husband, fished for dinner in the lake at the park. I never had trout that tasted so good. After making the kids try the fish, they chose to eat the hamburgers we brought as a backup plan.

From Yellowstone, we drove across Wyoming to Cheyenne, where we stopped to see a real rodeo, with bronco roping and everything. What a hoot. Next stop was Four Corners, in New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming and Utah. The boys loved the idea of being in four places (states) at the same time.

We arrived in Denver, happy to go to a Colorado Rockies baseball game at the infamous Mile High Stadium, drove up to the top of Rocky Mountain National Park and even tried Buffalo burgers.

In Moab, we went on a half-day rafting expedition in a class 4 river. The rapids were a blast. So were the water gun fights we had with the people in the three other rafts!

Grand CanyonDriving west, we fell in love with Bryce Canyon. It was so beautiful to gaze down at the gigantic monoliths from the top of the trail. Of course, we spent time at Zion National Park as well, since it was practically across the street. On to the Grand Canyon, our final park before heading back to Salt Lake City to return our home on wheels. We went to both the north and south rims. Very different views and although each was astounding, I highly recommend visiting the north rim.

This was the trip of a lifetime. A memory making adventure my family still talks about and will always remember. We could not have done it without the RV.

El Monte RV has RV rental locations in many places that can be used for a similar vacation (depending on the starting point):

Please feel free to share your RV vacation experiences with us. Send them to monty@elmonterv.com.
